高校生リーダー塾　-全国から集う160名の高校生と考えた-

毎年夏、九州福岡は全国から集う高校生の熱気に包まれる。
中心人物は事務局長の加藤暁子さんだ。彼女のパッションがこのリーダー塾をつくっている。今年は休止に追い込まれるという危機感をいだいていたが、九州の志ある方々から、こういう時だからこそ開催すべきと励まされたという。岩手、宮城、福島の生徒は激励のため、無料招待された。

震災時の体験から、遠野から釜石へ行き何を考え、具体的にどう手を打っていったか。特にリーダーシップではなく、フォロワーシップについて話をしました。フォロワーシップとは、後にいて、よく見ていて、ここはこうすべきだ、このようにしたら物事は進む、と考え、いざとなったら自分が出て行く精神です。この考えは京都大学の今西綿司先生たち、いわば京都学派の考えから編み出されたようです。

Japan Future Leaders School: Sharing ideas with 160 high school students from all over Japan.

Every summer, Fukuoka City in the Kyushu region heats up with enthusiasm of young Nationwide high school students. The key figure in the activity is the executive administrator, Ms. Akiko Kato. Her passion keeps this school program alive. Because of the serious disaster in Tohoku this May, she had a sense of crisis that forced a pause in the activity this year. However, people encouraged her saying it’s even more important to hold the event in a time like this. To provide encouragement, students in Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima Prefectures are invited at no charge.

I talked about my thoughts, and what I did specifically after the disaster in March on the way to Kamaishi from Tono. I talked more about “followership” rather than “leadership”. What is “followership”?

It’s the attitude to stand back while observing carefully, thinking what needs to be done to move on at a normal situation. And at a critical situation, the follower himself takes initiative. This idea was created by Professor Kinji Imanishi and his staff in the so-called “Kyoto School”.

出向いて語る　-現状から私達は何を学び、何を目指すか-

広島でパトリックさん、アトリエココ代表　草羽さんと皆さんで震災を語り合う。

4月の大変な時期に、フランス人のパトリックさんが、私の工房にきてパンを焼いてくれ、その後フェイスブックで知り合ったフランス人が次々と集い、工房を開放。毎日300個のパンを釜石に届けたことは以前にもお知らせした通り。

彼は東広島で「ラパン」というパン屋さんを開いているが、奥さんの可愛さんにも感謝を申し上げたく、訪ねました。7月29日の暑い日、パンを買い求めて車でひっきりなしに来客するのをみて驚きました。ラパンを開店して6年目、最初はまったく客が来ない日々が続き、思い悩むことも多かったと思いますが、石の上にも6年、パトリックさんの人間性とパンづくりの技術の高さが、現在をつくったと理解しました。
阪神大震災の時、2人は神戸のビゴさんのパン工房にいました。東広島の静かな田園と、住宅の中にお店を開き、現在ひとりで40種作るこのすごさ。「被災地を応援したい」とパトリックさんは熱い思いをもっていて、現在、岩手の小麦「ユキチカラ」を使って、「うまいパケット」を焼いています。「パン焼き技術を岩手の復活へ」この思いをしっかり受け止め、11月頃より私のスタッフを派遣して、学び、釜石でおいしいパン焼きを業となせないか考えています。











アトリエココ　草羽さんと広島の方々20名と震災活動の報告と話し合い

草羽さんは広島でフランス菓子の教室を開いています。日ごろより私の商品、岩手の力強い食材を使っていただいています。この日は岩手の郷土料理「ひっつみ」を作って、逆にごちそうになりました。広島の生産者(カキ、豚肉など)の方々も参加してくれました。
広島は原爆の地。現在東北は、震災で福島原発によって汚染されてしまった地。歴史は事実を体験した人が真実を証言して、前を進ませなければいけない。
セシウムが稲わらを汚染し、それを和牛が食べ、食肉汚染で全国に不安を与えてしまった。見えない放射能。牛乳はどうなっているのか。消費者から問い合わせがくるのは当然で、私は明確にメッセージを発していきたいと思う。

For discussion: “What shall we learn from reality? And, what goals shall we pursue?”

In Hiroshima, I discussed the disaster with Patric, a bakery owner, Ms. Kusaba, a representative of Atrie CoCo, and her staff.

If you review my blog, Patric, a Frenchman, came to my factory at a very hectic time in April, and baked bread. This led to several more people, some French some Japanese, to come to Tono one after the other. Here they made such a great effort to bake 300 loaves of bread everyday.

Patric is now in Higashi-Hiroshima and has a shop named “Lapain”. I wanted to visit him and his wife and thank them both for their support in April. On July 29^th, a very hot day, I visited his bakery. I was quite surprised to see the number of people driving to his place for bread. He once told me when he first opened the shop 6 years ago, he had no customers at all and didn’t know what to do. However, perseverance brings success.

It was clear that with his great personality and talent in baking, he managed to create his present situation.It’s astonishing to see him baking 40 kinds of bread everyday, and selling them at a small shop in a residential area of such a quiet country side.

Patric and his wife were in Bigo’s factory in Kobe when the enormous earthquake damaged the Kansai area.

They have a strong will to “support the disaster area”. Now he is using our “Yukichikara” wheat powder to make incredibly good French baguettes. I take seriously his willingness to “transfer baking skill to support recovery in Iwate” shown in the baguette. I’ll send one of my staff to his bakery this November, and have her learn the skill. I’m formulating a plan to have someone do it as a business in Kamaishi.

Ms. Kusaba offers French confectionery classes in Hiroshima. She always uses my products and vegetables.

On this day, she had made one of Iwate’s local cuisines, “Hittumi”, and treated me with it. I enjoyed talking with oyster and pork producers there.

Hiroshima has experienced the devastation of atomic bombing. Now Tohoku is experiencing radiation effects from the atomic plant in Fukushima. Who ever faces the true fact has to bear witness to the truth of history and let it go forward.

Rice straw in one area have been contaminated by cesium. Meat cows ate that rice straw, which alarmed everyone in Japan. Invisible radiation can naturally give fear to consumers, who are asking about milk safety.

I will be the witness and make a clear message to the society that the atomic plant is no longer valuable.

大炊き出し大会でコミュニティーをつくる

釜石マックハウス(衣料ショップ)駐車場で、7月17日大炊き出し大会が催されました。

難民を助ける会、日本リザルツ、カリタス、柳谷晃子料理教室生徒さん達、マックハウス社員の運動で、600食のホッケ焼き魚、ごはん、味噌汁、つけものを釜石市民に提供しました。

本格炭火でホッケを焼いて、ごはん、味噌汁もその場で手作り。40人のボランティアで600人の方々においしいお昼を提供しました。「食の力を釜石へ」この精神は3月13日以来続いています。ピース・プロジェクトの加藤さんの奮闘に感謝です。加藤さんは、釜石で私がオンデマンド方式で物資提供を行った時、いち早くトラックで多くの物資を提供していただいた、いわば恩人です。

日本リザルツ白須事務局と職員の方々は、アサガオの種子の無料配布と、アサガオ苗の提供、震災地復興のためのパンフレット配布。
柳谷晃子さんの料理教室の生徒さん達は、日ごろの料理の腕を盛り付けで披露してくださり、マックハウスの職員は、炭火焼きを炎天下で汗をたらしながら仕上げ、大奮闘。大成功でした。

避難所から仮設住宅へ。集団から個人の生きる戦いがはじまりました。

キーワードは「自立とコミュニティー」です。

Creating a community by distributing cooked food.

On July 17, we distributed cooked food at the parking lot of a clothing shop, Kamaishi Mac House.

A total of 40 volunteers from The Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR), RESULTS.J, Caritas.J, members of Akiko Yanagiya cooking school, and Mac house workers gathered and cooked 600 meals. The menu this time was cooked Hokke (a kind of fish caught in the northern fishery), rice, miso soup, and tsukemono (a kind of pickled vegetable).

The fish was char-broiled, and the rice and miso soup were prepared right there.

“Deliver food energy to Kamaishi” has been the concept since March 13^th. Thanks go out to Mr. Katoh of Peace Project. He is, so to speak, our lifesaver. He came to Kamaishi with a big truck and brought a lot of supplies when I first started deliveries to the evacuees.


The executive director of RESULTS.J, Ms. Shirasu, and her staff distributed morning glory seeds and seedlings for free along with government brochures. The members of Akiko Yanagi cooking school took on cooking and setting the plates, while Mac house workers sweat as they broiled the fish. We all worked hard and it was quite a success.


From evacuation center to temporary houses. Now each individual has to leave the group and fight alone.


The key words are “self-sustainability and community”.

花プロジェクトスタートする。

仮設住宅の日除けと、うるおいを少しでも取り戻すため「花プロジェクト」スタートしました。

それは「朝顔」。　
日本リザルツと骨髄バンクの連動で、5万粒のアサガオの種子が私のところに到着しました。　日置君が毎日私の畑から土を取り、播種し、 芽を出させ、ポットに移し、苗を育てて、仮設住宅にもっていく。仮設住宅各戸に育苗土と花植えトレーをもって育ててもらっています。

育苗土と花植トレーは、難民を助ける会から協力してもらいましたが、仙台のジャンヌ・ダルクこと、横山英子さんのパワーが活かされました。 配布は釜石カトリック教会のボランティアの皆さんにも協力いただきました。
今年はスタートが遅くなり、花の種類が少なくなりましたが、今後花の持つ力を生かしていきたいと思っています。

Starting the "Flower Project"

To provide a green curtain, and to enrich the mind and heart, we have started the “Flower Project”.

The flower is the “morning glory”. In cooperation with RESULTS.J and The Bone Marrow Bank in Nigata, 50000 morning glory seeds were sent to us. Mr. Hioki of RESULTS.J comes every morning to my farm to take some soil and sow seeds. When the first sprouts appear, each thin seedling is put into a flower pot. After a few days, they are ready to leave my farm. They are then taken by Mr. Hioki to each temporary house and the residents bring up the seedlings.

The soil and the flower pots were made possible with the cooperation of the Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR). We were connected with them thanks to someone we call “Jeanne d'Arc” in Sendai, Ms.Eiko Yokoyama. Volunteer workers from the Catholic church in Kamaishi helped with delivering.

Because we are already in late stages, we have fewer varieties of flowers. However, we’ll make good use of the ability of flowers.

日本リザルツの事務局長　白須さんは、NGOとして海外、特にハイチの支援で実績をあげているが、災害直後から岩手に何度も足を運んでいる。

今回、日本の災害にこれまで積み上げてきた経験をいかし、復活への支援をスタートさせた。私は別荘を開放し、2名の職員に常駐していただいている。彼らは毎日、釜石、大槌の仮設住宅に出向き、これから日本政府が発動する政策を具体的に提示、住民の方々の相談にのっている。2名の職員は、日置君と村上さんだ。そして被災地で失業していた佐久間さんを運転手に雇用し、地元事情を理解しながら、連日フル活動中。

RESULTS Japan, locating a base in Tono.

Ms. Shirasu, RESULTS’ executive director, has a track record of NGO support activity outside Japan, especially in Haiti. Since very soon after the earthquake, she has come to Iwate many times.

Using her experiences abroad, she has engaged in reconstruction assistance in the affected areas in Japan. I have an open house for the activities and let 2 workers stay there.

Everyday, they visit temporary houses in Kamaishi and Ohtsuchi. They explain in simple terms the policy the Japanese government will carry out in the near future to the people and offer individual consultation in the temporary houses.

The 2 workers are Mr. Hiroki and Ms. Murakami. In addition to them, RESULTS J has hired Mr. Sakuma, who had lost his job in Kamaishi, as a driver. They ascertain the true local situation and proceed with their work fully everyday.

再び起動します。

東日本大震災発生後5カ月が経過し、6ヵ月目に入りました。5月より本業が多忙となり、刻々と変化する被災地に目をやりながら、「成すべきことを成す精神」で動いてました。

ジャーナリスト、学者が相次いで訪れ、意見交換することが多く、この東北、三陸、岩手がどう変化していくのか、どう変化していったらいいのかを考えてもいました。

釜石、大槌、吉里吉里、浪板海岸を何度も訪れました。昨年夏に訪れ、砂浜のきれいな海に誇りをもっていた岩手の海が、まったく砂浜が消失し(地盤沈下で)、リゾートホテルのすさまじい破壊された姿に、回復力があるのだろうか、、、と思っていました。

現象は現象として受け止めよう。ここはしっかりした哲学をもって語らねばならない。時の経過は、起きたことに冷静さと落ち着きをもって受け止める態度、そして深さを与えてくれるからだ。

山形出身の作家、佐藤賢一氏は、「静かなる東北」という一文を載せている。「東北は悪いことがないとニュースにならない。普段は話題らしい話題もない。これだけの災害なのに、大きな声で泣くでも、騒ぐでもなく、目の前の作業に徹している。一面では正しいと思いながら、他面では正しくないと思い、当の東北人としては複雑である」とのべながら、作家　井上ひさしが生前取りあげた　斎藤茂吉(山形出身)の名歌をあげている。

「最上川　逆白波のたつまでに　ふぶくゆうべとなりにけるかも」

　ふぅ　ぶぅ　くぅ　ゆぅ　べぇ　　母音の使い方がすごい。

六つの母音のうち五つが「う」なのである。あまり口を開けないで、われわれはささやくのである。大きな口を開けては、冷気に肺まで冒されてしまう。厳しい自然環境のなか、静けさは生き抜くための知恵なのである。

東北の静けさは強さだ。その強さで堅実に日々を守る。

つまらないほど静かな日々をこそ、必ず取り戻してみせる。

We are going to resume our activities in Kamaishi.

Five months have passed since the massive earthquakes occurred.  Since May, I my own work has been very hectic, so “I did what was required”, paying constant attention to rapid changes in the disaster area.

Journalists and scholars visited us one after another, which led us to exchange views.  I was imagining how Sanriku, Iwate, and especially Tohoku, would change, or rather how they SHOULD change.

I visited Kamaishi, Ohtsuchi, Kirikiri, and the Namiita seaside many times. The beautiful seashore, which I saw with pride last year, has disappeared totally because of the land sinkage.  The resort hotel was severly damaged by the Tsunami.  I stood there in vain asking myself if there is still any power of recovery left in this area. We have to accept the facts as they are, I must think deeply, and talk with clear and steady philosopy.  Time can help me develop an attitude of steady calmness to accept what has happened, and give me a deeper sense of self. 

The author Kenichi Sato, born in Yamagata Prefecture, wrote “Silent Tohoku”.  He claims: “Nothing gets on the news except when a negative incident occers. In everyday life, there is nothing that we can call ‘topics’. Even after such a huge disaster, no one cries out nor complains, they simply do the work in front of them.  On one hand, I feel it’s right but on the other, I feel it’s not right.  I have a complex feeling as a citizen Tohoku.”  He refered to a famous poem written by Mokichi Saito (also a Yamagata native), who the auther Hisashi Inoue introduced:

“Mogamigawa Sakashiranami no tatsumade ni Fubuku Yube to narini keru kamo”.

How he chose the words “Fu Bu Ku Yu Be”, which match the rhyme, is incredible.

Out of 6 vowels, 5 of them are “u”, whispered and not opening the mouth too wide.  In northen Tohoku, where it gets very cold, when you open your mouth too wide, your lungs will be affected by the freezing air.  It’s our wisdom to survive in a severe natural environment.

The Tohoku silence is the strength that saves everyday life steadily.

We will truly regain those quiet and uninteresting days.
