Lei voleva mandarci i volontari di “Save the children”.

Support system

On March 30th, we finally transported the relief which had been stocked in Tono to Kamaishi by trucks belonging to Suzuki-san and Saito-san who are contractors with our company. Also today they helped us carry the body of Chiba-san, one of the volunteers for the 1st cooked-meal run, who passed on last night. I appreciate their support.

To open the self-support center on April 1st , we had a meeting with supporters who came from a distance: Hamaguchi-san from Osaka, Father Komatsu from Sendai and Eto-san from Nagasaki.

Hamaguchi-san has experience in relief support for victims of the Great Hanshin Earthquake and the Chuetsu Earthquake. Eto-san wants to be an elder-care professional. These supports are going to be organized by Seiko Ise-san in Kamaishi. I am looking forward to their great jobs.

Mr. Orikasa, who had brushed up his skills in France to produce wonderful European sweets and is one of the best pâtissiers in Iwate prefecture, offered an idea of a sweets workshop with our fruits and ingredients in my factory next week to give the cakes and pastries to survivors in Kamaishi.

We will hold a sweets buffet in the “Attaka-go” next week.

Ms. Eiko Yokoyama in Sendai offered to send us volunteers from “Save the Children.”
I responded that we would be happy to welcome them.

After the meeting we stopped by a nearby area in the fishery harbor and saw a supertanker that had come aground.

March 29th, 2011

On March 29th, we ran our 3rd "Cozy and Warm Bus Service Project for the People of Kamaishi", which proved to be very popular. This time we conducted an on-demand provision of relief goods at Toya Hotspring. It was the idea of Sarudate Yuko san and Ohara Naoko san to have people take back goods which would meet their individual needs. The scene of everyone getting on the bus with big bags looked just the same as an ordinary shopping expedition.

This system is special in providing things to meet people's demands by sorting clothes according to size and gender, throwing away unwashed laundry, and interviewing participants to find out what relief goods seem to be needed for the people coming next.

The project is significant for participants to enjoy delicious ice-cream and noodles, and also to provide opportunities to communicate with others in a fresh environment.

Suzuki Rieko san, chairperson of Millennium Promise Japan, participated in this project as support staff. She said that the elderly people of Kamaishi and Tono were so young. NHK commentator Goto Chie san moved south from Aomori Airport to Sanriku Coast and came to Tono in Kataoka san's car. Kataoka san is a member of the Citizen Bank. We stayed up late discussing how the devastated area could get back on its feet.

March 27th, 2011

We went to Kamaishi on March 27th to have a meeting to set the direction of our activity. We made the following decisions in order to improve the situation of survivors and to take care of each of them:

1. To establish self-support facilities in one of the cities in Kamaishi.
Ms. Seiko Ise is appointed as field manager, and will stay there at all times to coordinate with us regarding the daily activities and conduct assistance activities practically.
We will make preparations for establishment from March 28th to 31st and will implement our activities from April 1st to March 31st.

2. To hire volunteers.
We are looking for doctors, nurses, and those who are able to implement care treatment psychologically, in addition to those who clean up the destroyed houses and garbage. There are a kitchen, bathroom, and rooms in the center. We will make the center suitable for volunteers to stay so that they can stay as long as possible. Food is an issue that needs further consultation.

The first volunteer group, 20 students from the high school in Tono, will go to Kamaishi by bus and remove rubble in the city.

Our bus tour is very popular. This is a good opportunity to recover human qualities. There are many stories going on during the tour every time. What began as a place of refuge becomes just a relocation center after 3 weeks of being displaced. Japanese modesty, which was admired in some articles, is becoming diminished. Therefore, it is becoming really important to divide groups into smaller units or to make them go to their relatives.

Everybody has started to catch a cold. When people take for granted what they are given all the time, they start to lose their appreciation. This is the border where people just follow the instinct of human beings or choose to live with dignity.

The atmosphere of our bus tour is totally different depending on the situations of the participants. There are those who lose everything including homes and properties, those who lost only the first floor of their houses, and those who have all family members safe, but living separated in different shelters.

The only thing I can say is that everybody has a different facial expression before and after joining the tour.

March 26th, 2011

In this disaster, most of the afflicted people were victims of the huge tsunami. No one was really affected by the earthquake alone. How are we going to get back to ordinary life?

The Great Kanto Earthquake struck at 11:58 on September 1st, 1923. On September 6th, Goto Shinpei already announced the agenda for the Council of Imperial Reconstruction. On the 8th, he appealed for a ¥4 billion reconstruction expense, which was 3 times the national budget of the day. In the end, he finalized a ¥1 billion reconstruction plan, and on the 19th he set up the Council. As of now, our future is still uncertain.

Today we conducted the 2nd bus tour to enjoy the Towa Hotspring, Tono soft-serve ice cream, taiyaki, and noodles at Bangara. 45 afflicted people had been invited. There is always a scene where people hold hands saying "oh, you're alive!" Petrol is limited but can be found. Regardless of how disastrous the situation may be, people can endure if there is a glimmer of light. But what if there isn't? Business managers will be urged to have tough conversations with banks to obtain guarantees.

We will start our yogurt production from March 28th. Amidst the furor of radiation contamination fears, our milk tests resulted "uncontaminated". My farm was forced to dispose of milk for 10 days after the earthquake, but dairy farmers in Ibaraki and Fukushima still have no choice but to dispose of their milk because of contamination. If the vegetables of the area are also contaminated, Iwate will have to sustain the entire production. Miyagi is suspected to be contaminated, too.

Our farm's outlook on food appeared in the April 10th issue of the magazine "Croissant", released March 25th. Though we are receiving many enquiries, sorry, I haven't read the article yet. I'll be able to answer respectfully from mid-April.

March 25th, 2011

We might be witnesses to the biggest disasters in history: earthquake, tsunami, and radiation exposure. As 2 weeks have already passed, each of us needs to consider what this means to us.

I went on the bus tour to Tono and Towa hot springs with 40 survivors from Kamaishi and volunteer staff by. All the participants came from evacuation centers or their destroyed houses. It was their first time to take a bath in these 2 weeks and there were some who hadn't washed even their faces since the disaster. This bus tour was really appreciated by them. On the way back from the hot spring, we enjoyed some Japanese hot sweets and ice cream at my stores in Tono, as well as noodles, some rice with meat, and pickled vegetables. This project gave what the survivors in Kamaishi wanted the most. Ito san, who coordinated this tour in Kamsishi, said: "This idea is amazing. Everybody is really enjoying, and so am I."

A leader has to be a person of foresight. I refer to Shinpei Goto, who was from Iwate prefecture. After the Japanese-Sino (China) War, many Japanese soldiers coming back from China had contracted bloody flux and were unable to re-enter Japan. Gentaro Kodama, who was a General of the Japanese Ground Force at that time, ordered Goto to set up quarantine stations for the returnees. He led 687 quarantined ships and 230,000 personnel for 2 months. As his staff could take only 3 hours sleep a day, they became exhausted and told Goto that they couldn't work anymore. He shouted his reply: "Why don't you deliver the power that human beings can have?"

It is a time that leaders must deliver the power that we have.

March 24th, 2011

2 weeks since the disaster.

Since 2 weeks have passed, we are stabilizing emotionally. We can now see what is going around us. Milk was being disposed of previously, but we have started milking the cows again. The Tohoku Expressway reopened on March 23rd.

My days' work of agricultural production activities, the rebuilding of the distribution system...all the things we have to do do come one after another.

Vegetable seedlings in the greenhouse are growing day by day. The huge earthquake and tsunami put everything in chaos, but it's time for us to rise.

However, there is another serious problem: radiation contamination.

"Made in Fukushima" or "made in Ibaraki" is now a fatal label for a production area. We predicted from the beginning that anything within a 100 km radius would be contaminated, but now, a 200 km radius seems to be the range. We are checking the data.

As my farm produces milk, vegetable, and rice, we must do something to overcome the current situation. The area within a 30 minute drive to the east is destroyed. The wind and rain from the south are contaminated with radiation. The Ministry doesn't release any figures on radiation, iodine, or cesium detected in Fukushima. According to the desperate report of Naomi Toyoda, a freelance journalist, the radiation detector in Fukushima Futaba Town catastrophically wavered at its maximum scale. Have the figures exceeded that of Chernobyl?

For self-defense, I have decided to increase the production of "Tada Katsuhiko's vital water." This hard water contains 36 kinds of minerals. While farming for 23 years, I have been studying the mechanism of life. We must exercise atomic transmutation with the power of minerals, enzymes, and intestinal fermentation to fulfill revitalization.

Tomorrow is our first "Cozy and Warm Bus Service Project for the People of Kamaishi”. 50 people have been invited to this project in a short time.

Grande terremoto e grande tsunami.
